Biography
Richard is an Austrian-born, U.S. dual citizen painter whose oil canvases bridge historical artistry with contemporary vision. Working in a modern expressionist style, he draws deeply on art history, from the evocative symbolism of the Blue Rider group to the techniques of masters like Gustav Klimt and Max Ernst, to create vibrant reinterpretations of iconic imagery. Rather than merely imitating past art, Richard transforms it: each painting converses with the work of pioneers such as Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, and Kiki Kogelnik, filtering their influence through a bold, current-day lens. His practice affirms that originality can arise from dialogue with the past, inviting viewers to consider how meaning shifts over time and context.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Richard has showcased his work internationally. Recent exhibitions include “Reveal – The Empowerment of Appropriation Art” (The Caldwell Gallery, 2022), “San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center” (Austrian National Day cultural event, San Francisco, 2024), and “Icons, Rebels & Saints” (Wallbox Gallery, 2025). In 2024, he authored Reveal, a published art book that guides readers through the step-by-step techniques of art masters and features over 80 of his paintings.
As a former creative director, Richard has a 30-year background in visual communication, which he channels into engaging storytelling and educational outreach. He has even leveraged his art for philanthropy, raising funds for causes ranging from social justice to medical charity for organizations such as the Equal Justice Initiative, No Kid Hungry, Save Sight Now, NRDC and HelpUsHelp.charity.
Richard continues to push boundaries with bold color interactions and innovative techniques, bringing historical awareness into contemporary conversations about art and the environment. His next project will confront what he sees as humanity’s greatest challenge—climate change. Through visual storytelling, he aims to spark reflection and emotional connection, using art to express what facts alone often cannot.

“The notion of an original idea stemming from a single genius is a myth; since we exist within the framework of history, our perspective is constantly evolving.” - RMK
